The neighbourhood grocer has been selling vegan Ben & Jerry's for ages but I have never felt inclined to purchase any because they were all in chocolaty flavours, which I am unfortunately and inexplicably not fond of. ENTER KELAVA, a Malaysian-made locally sourced plant-based ice cream in cheerfully sophisticated flavours such as salted gula melaka. I first sampled this at Sala KL and was hooked. I could not stop at one scoop. It had the slightly grainy texture that most coconut-based ice creams do, but it was also somehow finer, creamier and smoother. The salted gula melaka flavour hit all the right spots. It was subtle and mellow without being cloying. I will most definitely order this crowd-pleasing, cruelty-free brand and flavour for my next dinner party.

Cool, another vegan Malaysian ice-cream! How much is it, what other flavors do they have?

I see. Almost the price of Haagen Dazs!
