Autumn is a widely respected elder within the multispecies community at Vine Sanctuary. Autumn came to the sanctuary after 12 years at a dairy, during which time 9 calves were taken from her. The dairy let her go because she had stepped on and crushed one of the teats on her low-hanging udders. The dairy had continued milking her despite that injury and a case of mastitis so bad that it took more than a year for antibiotics to clear it up. Autumnā€™s best friend is Rose, who she knew back at the dairy. Since coming to the sanctuary several years ago, Autumn has adopted calves who came to the sanctuary after being discarded by dairies. She is SERIOUS about these adoptions, spending all of her time tending, teaching, and protecting her adoptive calf. Her first adoptive son was Gemini, who regularly comes to visit her even though he now spends most of his time with the hardy herd in the back pasture. When Gem graduated to the back pasture, we thought that Autumn was done with child-rearing, because it had been taxing for her to keep up with him and his friends. However, just last year, she adopted a tiny calf called Moka who she is now helping to cope with adolescence. When sheā€™s not looking out for one of her adoptees or maintaining order in the herd, Autumn enjoys grooming goats. At 20 years old, Autumn is extremely elderly for her breed. While she can no longer romp as she used to be able to do, she still finds ways to join the fun when the herd is excited. Once, when all of the cows and sheep in her pasture were running around the pasture, kicking up their heels with glee because a new cow had arrived, we saw Autumn join the festivities by doing a little jig with a tree.
