Giraffe Gets Free Dental Check-Up

It must be tough when you're a giraffe and you get something stuck in your teeth.

Luckily help is at hand in the form of a red-billed oxpecker who is more than willing to play safari dentist. In these remarkable photos, a giraffe patiently stands still while a bird has a really good check over its teeth. The tiny bird doesn't think twice about placing its little head between the huge jaws of the giraffe.

The giraffe doesn't look entirely happy with the service, but then, who actually enjoys a visit to the dentist?

The amazing images were taken by Yulia Sundukova, a 36-year-old photographer from Moscow, Russia, at Tanzania's Ngorongoro crater.

"It was so funny to witness – everything about it was like a trip to the dentist," Ms Sundukova said. "The bird flew up and started picking food from the giraffe's teeth and stuck at it even as the giraffe stood there looking really grumpy and impatient. The funniest thing about it was the way the giraffe was standing, it reminded me of how people behave when they're at the dentist -- it just wanted the visit to end as soon as possible."

Clearly the giraffe and the bird have a symbiotic, or mutually beneficial, relationship -- the giraffe gets a good dental cleaning, and the bird gets a snack. We humans can change the nature of our relationships with animals if we choose to. We don't need to eat animal protein; we can survive and thrive on a plant-based diet. So how about it? Even if you eat a few meat-free meals each week, you'll be making a difference in the lives of farmed animals.
