A look at the inside of the VFC. It looks a bit like meat, but the king oyster mushroom doesn't have a meatlike feel. You're still biting into that chewy, gelatinous mushroom texture. So, the recipe should be more accurately called: "Crispy KFC-like Batter". Ha ha! 😄

Does the skin taste similar to KFC, do you need to add in some KFC spiced powder?

If I remember correctly, it tastes like hot & spicy KFC (I last ate KFC almost 10 years ago!). No need to add artificial flavour enhancers. All the natural spices work perfectly. 😊
